<p>It usually begins with a warm up in which the fitness level of the exerciser is a primary factor taken into consideration. That is to say, the warm up, as well as other exercises in the routine, is individually determined based on what the person can handle. Novices would do shoulder mobility exercises, lying hip extensions, and modified push ups. More advanced individuals would do push ups, pull ups, and special types of squats.</p>
<p>Next come muscular exercises designed to quickly accelerate the metabolic rate. As the body gets an increased demand for energy it automatically begins burning fat to meet the energy requirements. Though other programs advocate using light weights with a high number of repetitions for this process, in Turbulence Training moderate weights are used and the repetitions are kept relatively low. Often one completes only about 8 reps for each different exercise, both saving time and setting up a quick calorie demand that metabolizes fat while building muscle (which is assisted by the high protein in the recommended diet- discussed a bit more below).</p>
<p>The workout finishes up with intervals, which are short bursts of intense cardio-vascular (what Craig calls a &#8220;sprint&#8221; activity, since he associates the word &#8220;cardio&#8221; activity at specific time intervals interspersed with rest periods. This is a well known technique used by sprinters and football players to quickly increase cardiovascular strength and performance.</p>
<p>Most people, unless they are really overworked, can spare the 45 minutes a few times a week for these workouts. However for those that can&#8217;t Ballantyne has condensed the routine still further. He offers 15 minutes &#8220;express&#8221; workouts for those who really have a tough time finding an opportunity to get their workouts in. These can, according to Craig, bring similar benefits as the longer workouts and are truly tailored to the bust lifestyle that is a necessary reality for some people.</p>
<p>As Craig stresses, diet is also very important. You&#8217;re not going to easily &#8220;out train&#8221; a greasy, starchy, sugary diet. He therefore recommends a diet of targeted protein consumption in which a certain number of grams of protein is correlated to an individual&#8217;s body weight on per pound basis.</p>
<p>In order to make the point that a high fat intake will be hard to beat even if you do exercise a lot, Craig has a demonstration in which he runs on a treadmill while a friend of his east pizza. They have already determined the calorie content of the pizza. As Craig runs, he burns about 40 calories during the demonstration while his friend eats about 1000 in the same amount of time (he chomps about half the pizza). Get the point?</p>

Craig Ballantyne even recently came up with an &#8220;express&#8221; workout that has been boiled down to three 15 minute sessions.</p>
<p>Who is Craig Ballantyne anyway and how did he develop this system? In this Turbulence Training Review (review means to look back or look again, doesn&#8217;t it?), we&#8217;ll focus on the origins of the system that everyone&#8217;s talking about, with an eye to helping you decide if Craig&#8217;s books and system are a good investment for your fitness and life.</p>
<p>Growing up on a farm in Canada, Craig Ballantyne was always an athletic kid. His room was the scene of his first workouts, as he read of body weight exercises in fitness mags and tried them out. By the time he was 16, he was working out on a York Universal machine in his father&#8217;s shop. Soon after, he went to the YMCA and began weight training, and activity that would be ongoing for some time and give him a basic familiarity with muscle building and fitness.</p>
<p>At McMaster University, near Toronto, where Craig did graduate work, he combined his budding interest in interval training with other techniques he had learned and came up with Turbulence Training.</p>
<p>Craig also began writing for the magazine Men&#8217;s Health while in grad school. Through connections with this publication he got some of his turbulence training routines published in Men&#8217;s Fitness magazine, both of which he is still involved today.</p>
<p>During a plane flight Craig noticed that when the plane hit air turbulence it was subjected to intermittent periods of increased stress. It shuddered and vibrated under the pressure. Likening this to the way muscles quiver and vibrate when put under pressure to lift heavier weight than they do habitually, he came up with the name Turbulence Training. It was a catchy sounding title for his newly developed routines and suited the emphasis his workouts placed on intermittent high intensity periods of muscle demand.</p>
<p>Turbulence Training combines high intensity body weight exercises with interval training, which is short bursts of sprinting or other cardiovascular type training at specific time intervals with rest periods in between. There is also some relevance to the air turbulence idea here: planes tend to encounter brief periods of turbulence with calm periods the rest of the time. Combined with a healthy diet, this type of workout has been shown to greatly reduce fat and increase muscle strength in a minimum of time.</p>
<p>Ballantyne&#8217;s credentials speak for themselves: He holds an M.S. and is a C.S.C.S (a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). He is also a member of the Training Advisory Board for Inside Fitness. His customers give him enthusiastic recommendations and his techniques are well researched. This is the best fat burning ab workout you can do.  Let&#8217;s begin with the first superset which includes the Dumbbell Press Squat exercise and the Pull-up with Knee-up exercise.  For the DB Press Squat, start by holding the DB at shoulder height with your feet slightly wider than hip width apart.  Next, squat down, and then drive up, while raising the DB above your head.  Do all repetitions for one side, then switch arms and do the other.  The second exercise in the first superset is the Pull-Up with Knee-Up.  For this exercise, begin by taking an overhand grip, and as you pull-up, bring your knees up to your chest, and then slowly lower back down.  Although a difficult exercise to perform, this is a really great one because it&#8217;s actually two exercises in one.  If, however, you can&#8217;t do the Pull-up with Knee-up exercise, you can easily substitute high repetition dumbbell rows (20 reps per side).  By doing a high number of repetitions, your body is fighting against the rotation. Therefore, if you keep proper form and do high reps, your abs will actually feel it the next day.  Just be sure to choose a weight that is very challenging, but still allows you to use proper form.  For the second superset of workout &#8220;B&#8221; in AAA Abs, you will perform the Front Loaded Bulgarian Split Squat along with an advanced version of the stability ball plank, the Stability Ball Plank Rollout.  To begin, get a dumbbell, kettlebell, or a weight plate and place it across your chest, lift one foot on a bench behind you, drop your hips straight down, keep your torso upright, and come back up.  Do all repetitions for one side, and then switch over to the other side and do the same thing.  The second exercise of the superset is the Stability Ball Plank Rollout.  To get in position for this exercise, place your elbows on the stability ball so that you&#8217;re body is now in a plank position with feet on the ground, and then roll the ball out and then back in.  If you are unable to do this exercise, then you can do a plank with arms on the ball.  If that is still too difficult, then just do a regular plank with elbows on the floor.  For the third superset in workout &#8220;B&#8221; of AAA Abs, you will combine the One- Leg Stability Ball Leg Curl with a unique version of the side plank that includes a Dumbbell Lateral Raise.  So, for the leg curl exercise get on the floor and place one foot on the stability ball and the other straight up in the air.  Next, you will curl the ball in and out, while bridging your hips up.  Do all reps for one side, and then switch sides.  This exercise provides a really powerful contraction for the hamstrings, and you need to work your body as a unit.  Once you&#8217;re done the leg curl exercise, you&#8217;re going to follow that up with the Side Plank with a DB Lateral Raise.  Get into the side bridge position, hold the dumbbell down by your side, and then perform a side lateral raise up to the top and lower back down.  There&#8217;s still one more superset to go in workout &#8220;B&#8221; of AAA Abs.  So, for this final superset you are going to combine Burpees and Chin-ups with Jumping Jacks or Running in Place.  For the first exercise of the superset, do a burpee and then immediately follow it with a chin-up.  Do that for 10 repetitions and then do the jumping jacks or running in place for either 20 repetitions or 20 seconds. That is one set, so you will perform that 3 times in total.
